Description
This is a half-length portrait of Mr. Tan Chye Cheng, seated behind a desk. He was a prominent Chinese lawyer called to the Bar in 1933, the founding and Senior Partner of Tan, Rajah & Cheah, a law firm (1947); Member of Advisory Council (1946-1947), Legislative Council for South West (1948-1951) and Tanglin (1951-1955); Member of Presidential Council (1970-1971); Director of Straits Trading Company Limited (May 1963-1987); Chairman of Progressive Party (1948-1955), Liberal Socialist Party (1956-1957), and Straits Times Press (1974-1982); President of Singapore Olympic and Sports Council (1951-1962); and founding President of Singapore Advocates and Solicitors Society (1967). His father, Mr. Tan Guan Chua, was Member of Chinese Advisory Board and Committee Member of Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Title devised by Library staff.
