This 1986 photograph shows Bras Basah Road, at Bencoolen Street corner. It depicts two storeys shophouses with wooden French windows. Bras Basah is Malay for wet rice. In the early days, wet rice was laid to dry here on the banks of the Sungei Bras Basah, now known as the Stamford Canal. Title devised by Library staff.
