Sembawang MRT station


Sembawang MRT station, constructed as a part of the Woodlands MRT Line that was laid out in the 1990s. This station has the largest number of bicycle stands than any other MRT station on the Woodlands MRT Line.

Description
In 1990, the government decided to build the Sembawang MRT station as a provisional station. But with URA's 1991 Concept Plan to make Woodlands a regional centre for northern Singapore, the station was picked to be part of the Woodlands MRT Line to serve to the residents of the proposed Sembawang New Town.

On old habit among Sembawang residents was revived and incorporated into the design of the Sembawang MRT station. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, when the Naval Base and other British bases were still operating, a common sight was bicycles passing between Sembawang and Chye Kay village ferrying uniformed personnel. When the British withdrew in 1967, the use of bicycles dwindled. The centralising of civic activities at Sembawang New Town and the introduction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) have revived the two-wheels. Workers from the Sembawang Shipyard put up a request to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for a bigger bicycle parking area at the Sembawang MRT station as many of them cycle to work. Sembawang MRT station becomes equipped with 350 bicycle stands, the largest number of all the stations on the Woodlands MRT Line. The station has two bicycle parks within its precinct and both are exceptionally well-utilised with at least a hundred bicycles seen parked at one time, even at 3 or 4 am when the trains are not running.

To increase commuter comfort, bus bays at the MRT stations on the Woodlands MRT Line are located right at the entrance of the station. The bus bays are 36 m long, much longer than the 14 m bus bays in the older stations, allowing up to three busses at one time. All the bus bays are sheltered with four m high roofs. Additional features of the MRT stations along this route include covered linkways, overhead bridges with escalators and conveniently-located taxi-stands. The MRT stations are also fitted with real-time electronic display boards with information on train schedules, service disruptions and diversions and mobilisation exercises. The 19 new trains added to this line are specially designed with improved automated public address systems, better propulsion systems and extended braking systems for smoother rides.

There are four shopping units at the Sembawang MRT station, spread over 1,489 sq m of commercial space. The shops are located with greater visibility and easy accessibility in mind, on the concourse at one side of the station, unlike in older stations where one would have to walk a longer distance to reach the shops. The station, a distinctive building, has a kampung-style roof.
