Abstract:
Sita Dhahanam was staged at the International Festival of Ramayana in Bali, Indonesia. This dance drama is a visual feast presented in contemporary dance style based on the great Indian epic Ramayana. Sita Dhahanam depicts the war between Lord Rama and the evil King Ravana who had abducted Lord Rama’s wife, Sita. Sita is rescued by Lord Rama and his monkey battalion. Lord Rama, however, asks Sita to prove her chastity as she was held captive by King Ravana for many years. Sita jumps into the fire to prove her innocence. This dance drama was performed to a compilation of recorded classical music and songs. Due to the fact that this was an overseas production, Neila used a minimalist approach using limited dancers. To maintain the grandeur aesthetic of an epic drama, she used elaborate costumes and ornaments with character make up which added zest to this production. Neila has always strived to create a platform for local artists to get international exposure and uses such opportunities to showcase the Singapore Indian Dance style on the international arena.
