Abstract:
A number of poems by Edwin Thumboo focus on individuals from Singapore’s diverse ethnic cultures. Their inclusion can give a sense of how he is approaching the question of what being Singaporean must mean. This poem has as its persona an Eurasian, Alphonso, who traces the lives and generations of Eurasians in Singapore. It describes their various cultural influences, customs and uniqueness, and considers their relation to the history of Singapore as a place between the East and the West. This poem uses the Eurasian as a figure of multicultural Singapore and the strengths of having multiple or complex lineages.
