Abstract:
Berburu di Padang Datar is a play based on life in early colonial Singapore, ca 1819. Set in a fishing village along the sea, the play focuses on the relationship between Singapore Malay and Malays from other areas in the region, and the opening scene has the main characters discussing slaves being traded near the village. This play typifies Ghani Hamid’s interest in social history, and is only one of various plays he has written set either in nineteenth century Singapore or sixteenth century Melaka.
