Abstract:
This is one of two poems Edwin Thumboo wrote on the event of Singapore’s separation from the Federation of Malaysia on 9th August 1965. Both poems have historic significance as they record the popular sentiments then and an environment of confusion mixed with hope and fear. This first poem describes the enigmatic status of then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and speculations over the role he played in Singapore’s sudden independence.
