Abstract:
Playing Wu Miaozhen in “Justice Bao’s apology” is every laodan Beijing opera actress’s dream. In the story, Wu Miaozhen confronts her brother-in-law, Justice Bao. He had executed her son, who had been taking bribes and had caused great harm to the people in the Chen province. She accused her brother-in-law of being ungrateful for sentencing his nephew to death and forgetting the fact that he was an orphan brought up by his own brother. Phan inflects the dramatic music with a rich variety of vocal colors and expressive nuances that is parallel to the intensity of a lady in despair. Eventually Wu accepts her brother-in-law’s reasoning and comes to terms with the fact and agrees that her son should be responsible for all his wrongdoings. Phan is excellent in the duets, singing with great emotion and solidly well-integrated with her counterparts on stage.
