Abstract:
One of Edwin Thumboo’s more familiar poems, it pays tribute to Iskandar Jalil, Singapore’s famous ceramist and friend of Thumboo. The poem observes Iskandar at work and uses the moment to reflect on spirituality, art, and the meaning of life. It is one of the most contemplative pieces by Thumboo, and it brings together poetry, pottery, and religious faith. Religion is a major area of interest in Thumboo’s later poetry, and this poem is a good choice to exemplify this fact.
