Abstract:
This is a historic poem in early Singaporean literature. It is also purportedly the only surviving piece from a lost batch of political poems by a young Edwin Thumboo. The poem is fiercely anti-British and anti-colonial and therefore subversive, given the context of the time it was supposedly written, many years before its publishing date. It speaks rather prophetically of the rise of Asian confidence and demand for self-rule but refrains from being too driven by sheer anger. This infamous poem provides a key marker in any consideration of an early national, or proto-Singaporean, consciousness.
