Abstract:
A number of poems by Edwin Thumboo focus on individuals from Singapore’s diverse ethnic cultures. This supposed conversation with a Chinese friend, Kwang Min, only serves as a backdrop to the poet’s consideration of Chinese culture in Singapore. The various myths and symbols of the Chinese are woven together to give a sense of deep tradition and cultural grandness. The poem celebrates the possibilities of cultural continuity and richness in a place as far from one’s ethnic origin as Singapore.
