Abstract:
Caught up in an underground movement less for political reasons than in an attempt to understand his own identity, Thahn sees a Buddhist monk immolating himself. Thahn is haunted by the way the monk smiles in the face of death, and his search for understanding of this smile takes him into action with the guerrilla forces where he finds that neither the revolutionary cause or his love for My, the beautiful and committed guerrilla, provide the answers he is seeking.
